DELIVERABLE D2.2 - Embedding social justice in twin transition research: Concepts, definitions and methodological approach

This deliverable provides the conceptual foundation for FITTER’s understanding of just transition processes and contributes to existing knowledge by critically assessing mainstream approaches to the twin transition. It builds upon Deliverable D2.1 and aims to broaden our understanding of the relationship between the twin transition and existing structural inequalities. This is achieved through a problematization of how the economy, labour market, and inequality are defined within the European Union context, alongside a holistic approach to policymaking. This conceptual approach is the basis for the development of both the FITTER framework and methodology, offering critical lenses through which methodological steps in the research process will be examined.
The deliverable includes:
- An overview of existing inequalities in Europe, aiming to identify potentially structurally vulnerable groups.
- A summary of key themes related to the twin transition, including the green transition and digital transformations.
- An analysis of transitions in the four FITTER sectors – energy; construction and the built environment; mobility and transport; and food and agriculture – discussed from the perspectives of key actors. Each sectoral analysis explores power relations, employment relations, and consumer perspectives.
- A deeper exploration of how sustainability, technological progress, and the economy are framed, to clarify the systems and structures that contribute to both inequality and environmental harm.
- A description of how the project’s methodology is shaped by this conceptual development.
